The effects of Marine pollution on human beings

1. In the decades following the Chernobyl nuclear accident, thousands of people died of leukaemia and other serious diseases caused by exposure to high doses of radiation.

2. The Fukushima nuclear accident, in which many residents were exposed to radiation and agricultural products were contaminated, led to concerns about food safety.

3. Human health findings: Methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are marine pollutants with the most pronounced effects on human health. Exposure of infants in utero to these pollutants through the consumption of contaminated seafood by their mothers can damage the developing brain, lower IQ, and increase the risk of autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities in children. Adult exposure to methylmercury increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia. Man-made chemicals - phthalates, bisphenol A, flame retardants and perfluorinated chemicals, many of which are released into the ocean from plastic waste - disrupt endocrine signalling, reduce male fertility, damage the nervous system and increase cancer Risk.
